Letter from the President:

You may have heard the phrase busy as a bee; well this is exactly how the Columbus chapter board has been feeling lately. As spring approaches we are planning and implementing great opportunities for our members to make the best of their membership. In fact, I have been so busy I neglected to provide you with board highlights last month. I hope you missed it and are looking forward to reading about everything we have proposed in the coming months. As business picks up and work becomes increasingly demanding, don’t neglect the importance of networking, growing and continuing to learn. Your membership in SMPS provides ample opportunities and easy access to resources enabling you to keep that balance.

Please take a moment to read about some of these benefits:

  • POSITION your firm for the future of education facilities. Attend next month’s program, April 16th for a panel discussion Technology & Learning: Looking Beyond the Classroom. Technology innovations are redefining the classroom through experiential learning. In response, changes are occurring with curricula, pedagogy, building environments, and funding models. Planning and construction teams are becoming more inter-disciplinary to integrate these technologies. This program assembles a panel discussion to introduce emerging technologies and to analyze considerations for planning, funding, design and installation. Ohio Association of Community Colleges members are invited to attend at member rate.
  • REFINE your marketing efforts and planning. Does the thought of market research make working in the fast food industry sound fun? Even though competitive intelligence is necessary for success in today’s marketplace, conducting market research might make the average marketer feel not up to the task. Our April 1 MIX event, Market Research – It’s kind of a big deal will provide insight into processes and tactics of market research to make it less daunting. Jason Ulmenstine will focus on inward company research, primary and secondary research and implementation. Jason will visit the SMPS Marketing Handbook and provide real world examples with results. Walk away from this presentation with the knowledge and tools needed to evaluate your firm’s current research strategies to determine if those strategies are the most effective in implementing your firm’s marketing/business plan..
  • LEARN more about marketing and business development in our industry. New—for SMPS Members Only The Chapter offers members educational opportunities through CPSMU and our MIX programs. The Society is now offering members free educational opportunities through lunchtime webinars.
    • Lunchtime Learning Labs - There’s more than one way to feed your brain. Grab your lunch—or breakfast—and join SMPS on GoToWebinar for Lunchtime Learning Labs. This FREE educational series features great topics and respected speakers who can help you build skills to work smarter, advance your career, and build your firm’s business.  Offered every other month, the programs will run between 30 and 45 minutes—just under an hour to fit into your busy schedule. Find out more about these opportunities on the national SMPS site here.
    • Whether you are new to AEC marketing or just want to brush up on your knowledge, SMPS Columbus CPSMU offers opportunities to expand and grow your capabilities. CPSMU is free training for SMPS members on the Domains of Practice. Contact Amy Shea, Education Director is you are interested in attending our next session on Domain 6: Information, Resource, and Organizational Management.
  • CONNECT with industry celebrities at this year’s inaugural SMPS Columbus Celebrity Golf Outing and Tip-Off party hosted by our celebrity chair Clark Kellogg and title sponsor Huntington bank. Attend the Tip-off party in July and you’ll meet industry and athletic celebrity golfers, network with other golfers, help our charities and have an all-around great time! Register for the golf outing and consider sponsoring today! Details on this exciting event are on the event page here.

Thank you for your continued participation and membership. We appreciate that you continue to spend your valuable time with us and we strive to continue providing valuable events and opportunities. Please do not hesitate to reach out to me or any of the board members and share your experiences, suggestions, and ideas for the future of the chapter. We are only successful if you are successful.
