  About SMPS

The Society for Marketing Professional Services was created in 1973 by a small group of professional services firm leaders who recognized the need to sharpen skills, pool resources, and work together to create business opportunities. Today, the association has a membership of 6,500+ marketing and business development professionals from architectural, engineering, planning, interior design, construction, and specialty consulting firms located throughout the United States and Canada. SMPS offers a marketing conference, national seminars, awards programs, publications, and educational resources to highlight the latest trends in marketing and business development in the design and construction industries. In addition, SMPS' 53 chapters hold educational events and regular meetings nationwide.

Mission Statement

The mission of SMPS is to be the premier source for education, information, and resources in marketing professional services for the built and natural environments.

The Columbus Chapter

Celebrating 25 years of educational offerings and networking, the Columbus Chapter includes 100 members. Some of the chapter's founding members still remain active leaders in our growing organization. The chapter provides learning seminars monthly for its members and guests from September to July.

Domains of Practice for Professional Services Marketers

SMPS has conducted a practice analysis of professional services marketing to articulate and confirm the profession’s body of knowledge and the skills critical to professional competence. These knowledge and skill sets are classified under six domains:

  • Market research
  • Marketing planning
  • Client and business development
  • Proposals
  • Promotional activity
  • Information, resource and organizational management

The six domains of practice are the foundation for the Certified Professional Services Marketer program.
